York University Launches Co-op Program to Enhance Student Experience
You can now participate in short-term, paid positions where you can apply your theoretical knowledge in workplace settings.
The Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) at York University launched its new co-op program in fall 2024, marking a significant development in student education. Recognizing that classroom learning is only one aspect of a successful educational journey, the program aims to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical work experience.
Work experience is a critical component of professional development, and co-op can provide you with opportunities to gain valuable insights into your chosen field while earning a paycheck. By participating in short-term, paid positions, you can apply your theoretical knowledge in workplace settings, enhancing your understanding of industry practices and expectations.
York students find extreme value in co-op program
“I would highly recommend students join the LA&PS co-op program and look into co-op opportunities!” says Tristan Cabral, a current student in the human resource management program at LA&PS. “Through my co-op at Pratt & Whitney, I was able to apply content I learned in my various HR courses in legitimate business scenarios. Participating in a co-op has been such an enriching experience, as it has equipped me with the skills and knowledge I need to succeed in the workplace.”
Keisha Porter, currently studying international development studies & public administration at LA&PS shared, “my Co-op Program experience has been extremely beneficial, as it has introduced me to a field of interest that I otherwise would not have explored.”
Co-op program provides meaningful hands-on experience
Open to all full-time LA&PS Honours students starting in their second year, this optional opportunity allows participants to engage in their fields of study and explore career paths in a meaningful way. In addition to gaining hands-on experience, you will have the chance to build your professional network. This initiative fosters connections with industry professionals, which can be beneficial as you prepare to enter the job market after graduation. The experience gained through the program will enhance your resumé and equip you with essential skills that employers seek.
“Our experience with the LA&PS York co-op program has been wonderful, and I would highly recommend the program to other employers,” says Gurunath Pai, internal audit consultant at Celestica. “The student we selected easily grasped our job requirements and proved to be an invaluable asset to our team. In addition, we were able to provide the student with real life, on the job training on a variety of systems and cross-functional collaboration to build their leadership skills. Throughout the program, LA&PS has checkpoints with the student, and with the hiring manager, for feedback on the student's progress and performance, as well as to help mentor the student if required.”
Overall, the launch of co-op at LA&PS underscores a commitment to providing a comprehensive educational experience that will prepare you for success in your future career. Through the integration of academic learning and practical application, the Faculty aims to support your student engagement and professional development in a competitive job market.
